My Journey with Expressive Arts as a Spiritual Practice

There was a point in my healing where the usual things just weren’t cutting it. Talk therapy had its place, but I found myself craving something more. A different kind of outlet that could reach the parts of me that words couldn’t quite touch.
I had always been a journaler and writing has been my go-to for years but even that started to feel limited. I wanted to go deeper. I wanted to explore the more creative, intuitive parts of myself that I hadn’t made space for in a long time.
So I began experimenting. I doodled, I played with colors, I made little collages, I moved my body. Nothing fancy. Just honest expression. Over time, through curiosity and exploration, expressive arts became more than a tool, it became my spiritual practice.
Spiritual Practice? What do you mean?
When we hear the word spiritual, it can bring up a lot of different meanings. For me, a spiritual practice is any intentional activity that helps you connect with something greater than yourself—whether that's God, the Universe, your higher self, nature, your ancestors, or simply a deeper sense of peace and meaning within.
Expressive arts have become my way to soften, to listen inward, and to be in conversation with the unseen parts of my life. I never quite know what I’m going to create and that’s the point. It asks me to let go, to release control, and to surrender. And in that surrender, I often discover peace, truth, or clarity I didn’t even know I was seeking.
An Invitation to Explore and Create
Please know that you don’t need to be a formally trained artist to experience this kind of connection. Expressive arts as a spiritual practice isn’t about technique—it’s about presence. It’s about showing up with an open heart and a willingness to explore.
I invite you to take some time soon to explore and affirm your creative self and I hope that that creativity becomes a doorway to deeper connection, clarity, and peace. 💙
Reflection Prompt
What does your spirit need space to express right now?
Choose a medium (writing, drawing, movement, or sound) and let yourself respond without judgment. Just create. Let it be enough.
Affirmation
I give myself permission to create freely, to feel deeply, and to heal gently.
